Our small business is run by a mother and daughter duo. Hawai'i based bestselling children's books author and illustrator, Gill McBarnet, started Hawaiian Children's Books as a new mom over 35 years ago. Gill (“Jill”) McBarnet was born and raised in Zimbabwe, Southern Africa. She and her Hawaii-raised husband Terry moved to Maui in 1982 where she wrote her first children’s book about whales ("The Whale Who Wanted to be Small"). With a background in both teaching and publishing in Zimbabwe, Gill has applied these skills to writing, illustrating and publishing the 13 books she has written to date. Gill draws inspiration for her stories from the people, animals and lifestyle that surrounds her, particularly her children (Eddie, Will and Tara) who have been giving her ideas for over 30 years – since they were “tiny tots”. Gill's daughter, Tara, now operates the business and is excited to expand on her mom's vision! Gill writes and illustrates the books on Maui, Hawai'i and Tara has recently moved home to Maui from New York City to operate the business.
